Our Q&A with Jessica Estes

Jessica will be joining us as a speaker for WordCamp DFW with her talk entitled “A Story of Subtitling” on our Community track.

Why do you use WordPress?

It has worked great for our website for Threads of Compassion OKC. When I began coordinating the OKC chapter in 2010 my husband set up our site using WordPress and then taught me how to update the pages and create posts. Basically I trusted his research and was able to use the site he created so there was no need to look elsewhere. Using WordPress for our site allowed us to do everything we wanted to do.

When and how did you get started using WordPress?

Though I’d dabbled a bit with our Threads of Compassion site since 2010, I really feel like I began back in 2014 after WordCamp Austin. My phone died and I lost a bunch of pictures. I had a young daughter at the time and we don’t live near our parents so starting a blog seemed like a good way to save some memories and keep the long-distance grandparents informed about what’s happening with us.

How do you stay informed about WordPress news, tips, etc.?

I follow the community and TV team blogs on make.wordpress.org as well as the Slack chats for those teams (community recently renamed their Slack channels). I also follow some people on Twitter that post about WordPress stuff.

What do you like most about WordCamps? (and which have you attended?)

I like seeing so many different people all working on something together and welcoming in newcomers. It’s cool seeing such a variety of personalities and talents come together to make something great. I’ve attended Austin 2014, DFW 2014, San Francisco 2014, DFW 2015, US 2015, and OKC 2016.

Jessica will be speaking at WordCamp DFW 2016. Her talk is entitled “A Story of Subtitling“! Until then, find Jessica online at lstjess.wordpress.com or tweet her @jessicaestes.
