Our Q&A with Mark Tilly

Mark will be joining us as a speaker for WordCamp DFW with his talk entitled “Building A Cloud Service Into Your Plugin” on our Developer track.

Why do you use WordPress?

We developed the MyCurator Content Curation Plugin using WordPress because it has the biggest install base of websites and users in our target market.  Our market is small businesses, bloggers, small new media outlets and small marketing and web design shops.  These clients can be reached through the plugin repository as well as through the many WordPress oriented sites.  And it is a very International client base, allowing us to deliver 40% or more of our sales outside the US.

Technically, the platform gave us the ability to develop a ‘back end’ product that found and delivered articles, while leaving formatting, editing and presentation to the user’s theme and other plugins. This allowed us to really focus on our core product.

When and how did you get started using WordPress?

I started using WordPress in 2011 to develop the MyCurator plugin.  I had built an early version in Python, mostly a cloud service.  I decided I needed to integrate it into a client’s website to deliver it to a larger market.  In reviewing platforms, WordPress was the clear leader of website development platforms.

How do you stay informed about WordPress news, tips, etc.?

I use our product, the MyCurator Plugin, to continually search for new articles on WordPress development as well as other key WordPress Topics.  By using the training feature of the system, I weed out 90% of the off topic and junk articles out there on the web.

What do you like most about WordCamps? (and which have you attended?)

WordCamps are a great mix of business users, bloggers and developers.  The energy and ideas from so many diverse backgrounds and focuses make it unique and a lot of fun.  I’ve been to WordCamps in Philadelphia and Reno.

Mark will be speaking at WordCamp DFW 2016. His talk is entitled “Building A Cloud Service Into Your Plugin” Until then, find Mark online at target-info.com or tweet him @mycurator!
